We discovered this website today and it will be an excellent resource for Indigenous education. The Little Red Yellow Black (LRYB): An Introduction to Indigenous Australia. The website is the online (and updated) version of the classic book that was published and widely distributed by the former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) in the 1990s. The site is hosted by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies in Canberra, so you can be assured of its reliability.
Where I remember the old book being more chronological, the website is divided into four main sections:
- Who are we
- Culture & Sport
- Participation & Governance
- Resistance & Reconciliation
Other resources that are available, include,
- 41 page Teacher’s Notes (free download)
- Articles for further reading (free download)
- Audio-visual materials including an online gallery and online exhibitions (free download)
- Links to other resources
Information heavy, and supported by guiding questions, you will find the Teachers Notes an excellent primer.
If you want the physical book, you can buy it from AIATSIS for around $16.00.
